IndyMac Bank Falls In Housing Crisis.

July 13, 2008

US housing crisis is continuing entailing new and new victims. IndyMac Bank that was a high-flying mortgage lender specializing in exotic and risky loans falls in housing crisis now.

“It worked great during the housing boom. They made hundreds of millions of dollars in profits for a couple of years,” Ydstie says. “But when home prices started falling and loans began to go sour, they fell very hard.”

Weekend Edition Saturday, July 12, 2008 · On a day in which fear and turmoil swept through the financial markets, the biggest victim was a bank that specialized in risky mortgages. IndyMac Bank was seized by federal regulators late Friday. The bank is the largest mortgage lender to fail during the housing crisis and is one of the biggest banks to collapse in U.S. history.

“IndyMac was a high-flying mortgage lender specializing in exotic and risky loans sometimes called Alt-A loans,” NPR’s John Ydstie tells Weekend Edition guest host Linda Wertheimer. For some of those loans, IndyMac didn’t require borrowers to provide documentation of income.

“It worked great during the housing boom. They made hundreds of millions of dollars in profits for a couple of years,” Ydstie says. “But when home prices started falling and loans began to go sour, they fell very hard.”

John Reich, director of the federal Office of Thrift Supervision, said Friday that IndyMac “failed due to a liquidity crisis,” that is, it ran out of money. The OTS said it transferred IndyMac’s operations to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. because it did not think IndyMac could meet its depositors’ demands.
Depositors who had $100,000 or less in the bank won’t suffer any loss, but those who had deposits totaling $1 billion that were not insured are going to take a big hit: They’ll get a payment equal to half the uninsured amount.

Reich suggested interference by a U.S. senator may have played a role in the collapse. Two weeks ago, New York Democrat Charles Schumer wrote a letter contending that lax lending standards and deposits purchased from third parties had left the bank on the brink of failure.

Within 11 business days of the letter, there was a run on the bank: Depositors withdrew more than $1.3 billion. Reich charged that Schumer “gave the bank a heart attack.”

According to the FDIC, depositors will have access to their money this weekend through ATMs, debit cards and checks.

“IndyMac will open on Monday as a new entity under government control,” Ydstie says.

Drive Traffic to your Trade Show Booth with Promotional Items

May 11, 2008

Trade shows and conventions are usually extremely competitive as there are dozens, and sometimes even hundreds, of companies all vying for the same customers. Historically trade show booth operators realized that in order to drive traffic to their trade show exhibits they needed to hand out free promotional items. However, many of these companies failed to realize that the quality of their promotional materials plays an important role in the success of their trade show booth.

In the past most trade show booth operators have handed out free t-shirts, pens, stickers and other inexpensive promotional items. The problem is that the only people these items motivate are people who are generally willing to waste their time for a free pen. So you’re really not targeting the customers you actually want to attract, instead your just giving away free items just for the sake of giving something away.

Now imagine if you were to give away an MP3 player every hour on the hour. That would drive CONSIDERABLE traffic to your trade show booth. Even more traffic would come to your trade show displays if you advertised your promotional giveaway on the convention flyer or handout. Now you would actually attract the demographic of people who you would want to convert into your customers. They would not only visit your booth, but would also be interested in your products/services or at least pretend to be.

The main difference between handing out promotional items that are inexpensive and items that customers actually want to use is the difference between night and day. Usually customers will simply throw out your pen or t-shirt because they don’t need or want to have a pen with your company logo on it. However, they would be more than happy to keep an mp3 player with your company logo on it and would probably even be willing to spend ample time to learn about your products and services if they knew they could be rewarded with a free item they actually want.

The main thing to remember before your next convention is to realize that promotional items can be an effective way to drive traffic to your trade show booths but you have to give away items that your target market would actually want.

Oil News.

May 2, 2008

According to BBC oil prices have fallen on expectations that oil giant Exxon will restart production following the resolution of a strike in Nigeria.

The eight day strike contributed to near-record high oil prices after the company was forced to almost completely shut down production in Nigeria.

US light, sweet crude was down $2.53 at $110.46 a barrel. In London, Brent crude was $2.22 lower at $109.14.

Last week, oil was trading at almost $120 a barrel in New York.

The NNPC began mediating Monday to end the strike but its efforts yielded no results on Wednesday.
“The strike is to continue but negotiations will resume on Thursday at 12 noon local time (1100 GMT),” Olusola said.
XOM 89.70, -3.37, -3.6%) , is the second-largest oil company in Nigeria after Shell. MPN with its other upstream subsidiary, Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Ltd., or EPNL, produce around 866,000 barrels of oil a day.
The entire production has, however, been shut in by the strike while the company’s oil exports have also ceased. ExxonMobil has already given notice of force majeure as a result of the strike.
“ExxonMobil affiliates in Nigeria confirm that discussions are ongoing,” Yemi Fakayejo, MPN public affairs adviser, said Wednesday night. “It is the affiliates’ belief that dialogue is the most effective mechanism for resolution of issues.”
