US housing crisis is continuing entailing new and new victims. IndyMac Bank that was a high-flying mortgage lender specializing in exotic and risky loans falls in housing crisis now.

“It worked great during the housing boom. They made hundreds of millions of dollars in profits for a couple of years,” Ydstie says. “But when home prices started falling and loans began to go sour, they fell very hard.”

Weekend Edition Saturday, July 12, 2008 · On a day in which fear and turmoil swept through the financial markets, the biggest victim was a bank that specialized in risky mortgages. IndyMac Bank was seized by federal regulators late Friday. The bank is the largest mortgage lender to fail during the housing crisis and is one of the biggest banks to collapse in U.S. history.

“IndyMac was a high-flying mortgage lender specializing in exotic and risky loans sometimes called Alt-A loans,” NPR’s John Ydstie tells Weekend Edition guest host Linda Wertheimer. For some of those loans, IndyMac didn’t require borrowers to provide documentation of income.

“It worked great during the housing boom. They made hundreds of millions of dollars in profits for a couple of years,” Ydstie says. “But when home prices started falling and loans began to go sour, they fell very hard.”

John Reich, director of the federal Office of Thrift Supervision, said Friday that IndyMac “failed due to a liquidity crisis,” that is, it ran out of money. The OTS said it transferred IndyMac’s operations to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. because it did not think IndyMac could meet its depositors’ demands.
Depositors who had $100,000 or less in the bank won’t suffer any loss, but those who had deposits totaling $1 billion that were not insured are going to take a big hit: They’ll get a payment equal to half the uninsured amount.

Reich suggested interference by a U.S. senator may have played a role in the collapse. Two weeks ago, New York Democrat Charles Schumer wrote a letter contending that lax lending standards and deposits purchased from third parties had left the bank on the brink of failure.

Within 11 business days of the letter, there was a run on the bank: Depositors withdrew more than $1.3 billion. Reich charged that Schumer “gave the bank a heart attack.”

According to the FDIC, depositors will have access to their money this weekend through ATMs, debit cards and checks.

“IndyMac will open on Monday as a new entity under government control,” Ydstie says.

Promotional items and business gifts are indispensable for the creation and development of any company’s image, regardless of its location or sphere of activity. Now you can find promo products for any industry: banking, trade show, constryction, healthcare, real estate promotional items, etc, etc.

Your logo and/or slogan imprinted on a cup, pen or a key chain makes your existing or potential business partners remember your better and get a better idea of who you are and what you do. When on a business trip abroad or hosting business guests at your office, make sure you always have a few business gift sets at hand. Their content can include anything from erasers or promotional magnets to clocks and calculators – your fantasy and marketing budget are the basic selection criteria. Style and design are up to you, be it humorous or serious, classic or ultra-modern.

Just keep in mind that any promotional products should be in line with your overall corporate style in terns of color, shape and general impression that it produces. Even a simple gift can make your business path make a sudden turn for the better by attracting the attention of those you really need and helping them single you out and identify you not only with specific colors or pictures, but what is more important – with certain values and ideas.

Well known booming social network Facebook was opened in 2006, since then anyone who wants can use it sharing photo and enjoying friends. But do you know that if users aren’t satisfied to merely create a Facebook profile, Agriya Infoway, based in Chennai, India, offers another option: Create your own Facebook, Forbes.com reports.

Agriya sells a $400 software package, called “Kootali,” that lets developers replicate Facebook’s design and features, and that is exactly what is Facebook shorted of . Fifty copies of the software have been purchased in the last six months, says Agriya’s chief technology officer, Aravind Kumar, though he says many hundreds more have been distributed on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks.

Kumar isn’t concerned about the legal implications of piggybacking on the Palo Alto, Calif.-based social network’s success. “We haven’t stolen any of Facebook’s content or images, so we haven’t done anything wrong,” Kumar says. “We’re just giving Facebook’s look and feel to our customers.”

Those customers, mostly unknown sites like Faceclub.com and Umicity.com, don’t pose much of a competitive threat to Facebook. But, according to Forrester Research analyst Jeremiah Owyang, Agriya’s cloning software represents a more general problem for Facebook: that any skilled developer can recreate the site’s basic social networking functions. “Social networking features are a commodity,” Owyang says.

Besides that several international Facebook-like sites are also enjoying the success. Creators of the German look-a-like site StudiVerzeichnis–German for “Student Index”–have gathered around 6 million registered users. VKontakte, a Russian university-based networking site whose name translates to “In Contact,” and russian Odnoklassniki” boasts that it’s not only the most popular social networking site in the country, but with 4.5 million unique visitors a day and 13.3 million registered users, the most popular site in Russia. Also the Chinese site Xiaonei, whose name means “In the School” in Mandarin, claims to have received around 15 million unique visitors in April. The site’s parent company, Oak Pacific Interactive, received $430 million the same month in venture capital funding targeted at Xiaonei from the Japanese investment firm Softbank.
You can read the complete article on Forbes.com I just would like to add that there is nothing surprising in such situation and Facebook owners have not to be filled with anguish and melancholy with that. Their clones may have already saturated some international markets. In China, for instance, where the Web audience numbers more than 220 million users by the count of research firm BDA China, Xiaonei has already registered more than 90% of college students, according to Oak Pacific Interactive’s chief operating officer, James Liu. He compares Facebook to Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ), eBay (nasdaq: EBAY - news - people ) and MySpace, all of which have tried to penetrate China’s Web market and been trounced by local competitors.
Hainei, Wang’s second social networking project launched near the end of 2007, is aimed at adults rather than students, but its design is practically identical to Xiaonei’s–and Facebook’s. In six months, it’s attracted more than 100,000 registered users, Wang says.

Asked if he feels any compunction about taking features wholesale from Facebook–twice–Wang points to Mark Zuckerberg’s own copycat problems. Since 2004, the owners of rival site ConnectU have claimed that Zuckerberg stole intellectual property from their social network while working as a software developer for the site.

“ConnectU accuses Facebook of stealing their idea. Does that matter?” Wang asks. “No. We don’t worry about that. It’s not about the idea. It’s about execution.”

I have a friend who makes a lot of money and doesn’t actually work herself! How does she do this? You would be shocked, but she gets paid to find other people jobs and to find companies some employees. That’s right, she never has to go for an interview or fill out a job application herself. All her “customers” love here because she finds them work. In addition, big companies pay her because they don’t have to go through the trouble of finding employees themselves.

My friend is what is called a “head hunter.” Unlike the original head hunters, she is neither a primitive tree dweller nor a cannibal. Lots of people send her their resumes. (Strange since she has never hired anyone!) She looks through them and picks the best and then just sends them on to all sorts of top companies. If one of those companies hires one of the people from whom she sent a resume, she gets paid by both the company hiring and the person who was just hired! Each one pays her one month of the new employee’s salary. So with just one placement, she makes about $20,000. (Her clients usually get salaries around $120,000/year). To earn that $20,000 she didn’t even have to leave her house. All she needed was a fax machine!

I don’t know the total my friend makes, but I do know it is all profit. When she doesn’t feel like working — she doesn’t work! She is her own boss and makes as much money as she wants. Every now and then personnel managers take her to lunch because she has saved them so much time by sending great candidates for job openings. You should see all the gifts she gets at the end of the year from candidates she has placed. This is really a great way to make money and live a relaxed lifestyle!

How to hold onto their hard-earned dollars. Everyone wants to know and I’m sure many of us have known already the ways but however I would like to recall you some important and well known personal finance rules.

1. Pay yourself first. Whether it’s through your employer-sponsored 401(k), an individual retirement account, or passbook savings account, sock away at least 10 percent of your income for you. After all, you don’t work just to pay bills; it just feels that way a lot of the time.

2. Save three to six months of worth of income for emergencies. And don’t touch it unless it’s really an emergency. Saving for a vacation or new wardrobe do not constitute emergencies. You never know when you could lose your job, become disabled or sick, or have a major medical or family emergency.

3. Take advantage of your employer-sponsored 401(k) plan. Contribute at least as much as your employer will match, which is typically between 3 and 10 percent. Consult your the human resources department at your work for details on how that particular 401(k) plan works.

4. Pay off credit cards with the highest interest rate first. Obviously, there’s no sense in paying off a 12 percent card before a 15 percent card. Make minimum payments on the 12 percent card until the one with the 15 percent rate is paid off.

5. Come up with a budget and stick to it. You can use a computer program or just pen and paper. But do it. Figure out your income and expenses and what you have left over to spend as you wish.

6. If you have trouble determining where your money goes, particularly cash, then keep a spending journal. Document every expenditure for at least a two-week period. This will help you in coming up with a budget as well.

7. Don’t borrow from your 401(k) or retirement plans. This money, after all, is for your retirement. Plus, the tax implications and early withdrawal penalties are so hefty that you really are giving up a lot for a short-term cash infusion. You should have a separate savings account for your current needs.

8. Pay in cash when and as often as you can. It’s amazing how good that feels.

9. Shop around for the best credit card deals and banking programs. By shaving off a few percentage points on your credit card or avoiding bank fees, you can save hundreds of dollars a year.

10. Avoid peer pressure. Your friend might be able to afford five new pairs of leather boots, but that doesn’t mean you can. Who even knows if your friend can and who cares. Take care of yourself first and don’t try to keep up with the Joneses. There will always be people better off and worse off than you are.

Trade shows and conventions are usually extremely competitive as there are dozens, and sometimes even hundreds, of companies all vying for the same customers. Historically trade show booth operators realized that in order to drive traffic to their trade show exhibits they needed to hand out free promotional items. However, many of these companies failed to realize that the quality of their promotional materials plays an important role in the success of their trade show booth.

In the past most trade show booth operators have handed out free t-shirts, pens, stickers and other inexpensive promotional items. The problem is that the only people these items motivate are people who are generally willing to waste their time for a free pen. So you’re really not targeting the customers you actually want to attract, instead your just giving away free items just for the sake of giving something away.

Now imagine if you were to give away an MP3 player every hour on the hour. That would drive CONSIDERABLE traffic to your trade show booth. Even more traffic would come to your trade show displays if you advertised your promotional giveaway on the convention flyer or handout. Now you would actually attract the demographic of people who you would want to convert into your customers. They would not only visit your booth, but would also be interested in your products/services or at least pretend to be.

The main difference between handing out promotional items that are inexpensive and items that customers actually want to use is the difference between night and day. Usually customers will simply throw out your pen or t-shirt because they don’t need or want to have a pen with your company logo on it. However, they would be more than happy to keep an mp3 player with your company logo on it and would probably even be willing to spend ample time to learn about your products and services if they knew they could be rewarded with a free item they actually want.

The main thing to remember before your next convention is to realize that promotional items can be an effective way to drive traffic to your trade show booths but you have to give away items that your target market would actually want.
