Pair Antivirus Software with Smart Computer Habits for Less Virus Infections
It’s a normal thing to feel quite invincible when you know there’s something protecting you. Like when a cop dons a bulletproof vest, he is more willing to head into a shootout with a suspect, and you also react the same way when it comes to your computer habits. You feel that by having an antivirus program running in the background, you don’t have to be too wary of viruses lurking in the seedy corners of the web.
Having paid or free antivirus software is the last line of defense you have over a virus, but you can actually avoid getting viruses frequently just by being smart when you’re connected to the internet. Remember that you’re the first line of defense and it depends on you whether a virus could get into your computer. Here are some tips to lessen the instances of having your antivirus do all the work and possibly failing against new viruses:
1. Don’t click on random links
A website you’re reading might appear legit, but that doesn’t mean the website a link is leading you to will be as safe. Even worse, your habit of clicking links included in emails from people that you don’t actually know is the easiest way to allow a virus into your computer. So remember next time: do not click links in emails and instant messages that you did not request for.
2. Don’t follow any instructions on dubious pop up ads
Anything that’s a pop up page is most likely harmful, especially if it came from an ad you’ve clicked or an offer that you just couldn’t resist. Just by landing on to malicious websites, it’s possible for viruses to work their way into your computer through holes in your browser’s security.
3. Not updating your programs
Updates are available for a reason. They improve the program you’re using in terms of performance and security. So don’t ignore those update reminders, especially from your browser and any Adobe software – these are the most used programs by viruses as a passageway to your computer.

DIY Painting Tips
Want to save some money? Well, rather than call in a professional to do your next DIY job, why not do it on your own? Here are some useful tips to make sure you get your next painting job right.
It’s incredibly important that you prepare the surface you are going to be decorating before you start. If the surface is bumpy, full of holes, rotten or spiky it’s going to have an obvious effect on the finish.
However tempting it is, try not to settle for buying cheap paint brushes and paint. Not only will more coats of paint be required with cheap paint, but cheap brushes can also have an effect on the finish.
Clean the brushes as soon as you can after you’ve finished painting for the day. Clean as thoroughly as you can and get as much paint out of the brush as possible.
Wrap the brush in cling film afterwards in order to keep the bristles supple. If a brush has dried out and has been left for some time, a brush restorer can help breathe life back into it.
If using water-based paints, washing the brush in water will work well. If you’ve been using oil based paints, however, use white spirit. Make sure your hands are covered; you can use rubber gloves for this. After rinsing the paintbrush in the white spirit, run it under hot water. Don’t rush the job; always let the paint dry fully in between coatings, and try to keep the area as clean as possible as dust can easily find its way into your paint.
Protect carpets and sofas by covering them while you are painting. Hang plastic bags over light fixtures and put a sheet over your extending dining table.
Use masking tape to get a precise finish around light switches and skirting boards.
Oh, and apparently, by cutting an onion in half and leaving it in a recently painted room, it will absorb a lot of that nasty paint smell that lingers for days and gives you a headache!

Protect Your Business From Identity Theft
Most people these days are aware of the dangers of identity theft, and take some steps to protect themselves.
Fewer people, though, consider the possibility of their business being vulnerable to opportunistic fraudsters.
If you run a small business, even from home, then you really need to make sure it is not compromised.
Identity theft is on the rise, and it only takes one unscrupulous person in possession of a piece of your letter-headed stationery to put your company in jeopardy.
These days, few businesses have embossed stationery, so it’s easy for a criminal to photocopy your letter-headed design and create a whole range of stationery they can then use for nefarious reasons.
Using something as simple as a free photo-editing program, they could have themselves an endless stock of “your” office paper, business cards or envelopes.
That’s why it is vital to take proper steps to destroy your old stationery, rather than just throw it out.
It might not be something that gives you a second’s thought, that if you print something out from your home or office printer and it comes out smudged, you put the paper in the bin. But who knows where that stationery could end up?
It’s absolutely essential to invest in a good office shredder, so that the stationery you don’t need doesn’t end up costing you your business.
Paper shredders come in many different price brackets and sizes, but virtually all of them will cut your stationery into small enough chunks that even the most painstaking thief won’t be able to stick it back together.
It takes just a moment to insert your waste paper into the shredder, but it means you are guaranteed peace of mind.
It is not just your company logo or masthead that can be exploited by thieves. You don’t need to be a technical genius to know how to scan in someone’s signature and then use photo-editing software to paste the image of the signature onto an official document.
So it’s absolutely vital that every item of stationery that carries your company details, your signature, your bank account details or even your address, is properly shredded before it is disposed of.

Honda Civic IMA Hybrid
Taking a look at one of the most competitive and fast-moving industries in the modern world, the car industry, there are many cars that can lay a justifiable claim to being the best family car, depending on the criteria by which we’re going to judge them.
But if we include a requirement for family cars to be “green” as well – then the list becomes whole lot shorter.
The truth is that many family cars simply aren’t all that environmentally friendly – particularly when judged by today’s higher than ever environmental standards.
All the major manufacturers are making huge efforts to make their family cars ever-more environmentally sound as they realize that families’ green agenda grows continuously – as does their desire to extract ever more miles per gallon of fuel; something which also just happens to be beneficial for the environment and your pocket.
One car which can justifiably lay claim to being the best all-round green family car is undoubtedly the four-door saloon; the Honda Civic IMA Hybrid.
The car’s 1.3 litre engine combines the performance of a 1.8 petrol engine with the efficiency of a 1.0 litre engine thanks to its hybrid nature; using the small petrol engine to accelerate with an electric motor-generator to power the car while cruising.
In fact, the Honda Civic IMA Hybrid delivers a highly respectable 61.4mpg on a combined cycle – with a range of around 720 miles from just one tank of fuel, and its purchase price won’t break the bank.
The car also benefits from being in a low insurance group, and has low tax because of its 109g/km CO2 emissions.
Of course, the battery doesn’t need to be plugged in as it recharges itself. The Honda Civic IMA Hybrid also features a 7-speed CVT automatic gearbox and it switches itself off when the car is stationary and idling.

Who drives a hybrid?
The car industry is a rapidly evolving one, with car manufacturers forced to react constantly to pressures from government officials and environmental activists. For those involved in the car business, there is little doubt that hybrids are the cars of the future – with their economical fuel efficiency and their low emissions they save money for their owners and help save the environment. So what kind of person drives a hybrid?
Families
Twenty years ago, when choosing family cars, it’s unlikely that it even crossed a prospective purchaser’s mind to ask “how good is this car for the environment?” It’s far more likely that they were considering how big the interior was, and in the Dad’s case, what its top speed was! Miles per gallon have always been important, of course, and this remains true today.
However, many parents of young children looking for the best family car today also take a car’s environmental credentials seriously. After all, if you can buy a car that improves the air quality for your own children, it’s bound to influence you a little.
Bright young things, and old ones too
It’s difficult to know which generation is the most environmentally conscious these days. Many young drivers today have grown up with a much greater awareness of how one important individual actions can be in protecting the planet.
They are therefore more likely to choose a car that will do as little environmental damage as possible.
With hybrid cars’ fuel economy and low emissions, they help the environment on two fronts – using less fossil fuel and reducing the number of greenhouse gases produced.
However, it’s also true that many of the first people to convert to hybrid cars were in the older generation. Perhaps they’re thinking about protecting the environment for future generations or maybe it’s more to do with getting value for money with the great miles per gallon you can get from a hybrid.
Of course, every person has their own personal reasons for buying a particular car, and it’s unfair to pigeon-hole, but value for money and environmental concerns are just two reasons why all kinds of people are choosing hybrids over conventional cars.

Office Managers Rule OK
If you are an office manager then you will be well aware of how pivotal your role is within your company, but you may also be aware of being made to feel unimportant by those in loftier positions. Shame on them I say! Without you the smooth running of their precious business would completely collapse and their world would be chaos. Like a perfect PA, a brilliant office manager is an essential asset to many businesses and one which should be treasured and not taken for granted.
Depending on the size of the organisation an office managers role can encompass many things such as purchasing, recruitment and recycling as well as the more typical role of running the office function of the business. Keeping on top of the everyday requirements of a busy staff team can include ordering printer ink, emptying the office shredder and even making those all important cups of tea. It is a great role for someone sociable and unflappable who is able to spin many plates at once and also settle minor personal disagreements. If you have ever been involved in a ‘whose turn is it to wash up’ argument at work then you will know what I mean!
I guess what I’m saying to all the office managers out there is be proud of yourself because you are doing a fantastic job, and to all those bosses who haven’t noticed – take a look! The next time you go to use the shredder and it works smoothly, or you enter the board room for a meeting which has been set up exactly as required then spare a thought for the people that have done that for you and make a point of noticing. Saying thank you takes seconds and can make a whole world of difference to someone’s day. Thank you for listening!

Eight banks fail EU stress test
With the effects of the most recent global recession still being felt across the globe, any measures that can be taken to safeguard against such events ever happening again must be viewed positively. In light of this statement, the recent stress tests inflicted upon 90 European banks to see how well placed they are to withstand another financial crisis must be viewed as nothing but a positive step forwards in the fight against financial irresponsibility on behalf of the financial institutions we depend upon to such a large extent.
The European Banking Authority carried out this financial health-check, which saw a total of eight banks fail and a further 16 categorised as being at risk of failing in the near future. Five of the banks that failed the test are Spanish, with another based in Austria, and two more in Greece. With Helaba, a well-known German bank, also deciding to pull out of the stress test at the last minute, it’s fairly safe to say that nine banks actually failed the test. The four British banks assessed, Royal Bank of Scotland, HSBC, Barclays, and Lloyds, all passed.
One of the main benchmarks by which banks taking part in the test were measured against is having at least 5% “core tier 1″ capital.
The Financial Services Authority revealed after the results that: “The results support our own stress tests and we are pleased that the major UK banks have capital above the minimum required in the rest, reflecting the work we and the banks have undertaken to improve resilience since the crisis”.
If you need some light relief after all that financial confusion, check out Fosters’ new video campaign with reeves and Mortimer.
